ISU Researchers Earn Patent for Fit-Adjustable Nursing Bra Design

Innovative Nursing Bra Design Earns ISU’s First Apparel Patent

AMES, Iowa – A new breakthrough in maternity wear is changing the landscape for new mothers, thanks to Ling Zhang, an associate professor at Iowa State University. Zhang, along with her Ph.D. student Li “Lily” Jiang, has developed a fit-adjustable nursing bra that prioritizes comfort and functionality, earning ISU its first apparel design patent.

With a background in professional bra design for major brands like Calvin Klein and Victoria’s Secret, Zhang was surprised by the limited options available for nursing bras when she became a mother. The realization that little had changed over the years inspired her to leverage her expertise in functional apparel design to address the shortcomings in maternity wear.

Addressing Maternity Wear Challenges

In 2020, Zhang began her research by examining existing nursing bras and surveying 1,300 mothers on their preferences, which highlighted the need for better comfort and aesthetics. “The top priorities were consistently comfort and fit,” Zhang noted, emphasizing the importance of confidence-boosting, attractive designs for new mothers.

Together with Jiang, Zhang developed prototypes of a nursing bra and a nursing babydoll garment, incorporating feedback from real-world wear tests. Their innovative design eliminates the need for metal wires and elastic, using soft materials like bamboo jersey and ultra-soft Velcro to enhance comfort and adjustability.

Collaboration and Innovation

Jiang, who has worked closely with Zhang since her master’s degree, has played a significant role in refining the designs. “This project has been a wonderful learning experience,” Jiang remarked, adding that she’s proud to contribute to a solution for new moms’ challenges.

Their creation features a nursing bra with adjustable front bands and a babydoll that combines a top and bra, offering privacy and convenience. Their mutual trust and matched aesthetic vision have been pivotal in the successful execution of this project.

A Milestone in Apparel Design

The recognition of their work came in November 2024, when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approved their patent for a multi-layered maternity garment. This marks a significant achievement for ISU, as it is the institution’s first patent in apparel design.

Ling Zhang’s startup, MUQIN — meaning “mother” in Mandarin — now offers the patented nursing bra and babydoll in colors like pink and blue. The positive feedback from customers underscores the impact of their innovative designs.

Supported by grants from the ISU College of Health and Human Science and the ISU Startup Factory, Zhang aims to expand her product line, bringing more options to mothers both online and in physical stores nationwide. “Innovation requires vision and passion, but support and collaboration make it possible,” Zhang expressed, acknowledging the backing she has received at Iowa State.
