Basketball Doubleheader in Rome to Fuse Faith and Athletics in 2026
An upcoming basketball event in Rome is set to blend sports, faith, and academics, promising a rich experience for participants and spectators alike in November 2026.
VILLANOVA, Pa. (April 17, 2026) — Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame have announced a collaborative event in Rome, Italy, scheduled for November 2026. This gathering will highlight the Catholic heritage shared by the institutions through a basketball doubleheader that integrates academic and spiritual elements.
According to University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, “This extraordinary experience reflects the very best of Villanova’s Augustinian Catholic mission—uniting faith, learning and community in a global setting.” The initiative includes elements of academic engagement, cultural immersion, shared worship, and athletic competition.
The games, commemorating the election of Pope Leo XIV, an Augustinian friar and Villanova alumnus, will open the 2026–27 NCAA basketball season. The men’s match is set for November 1, 2026, with national broadcasts on FOX at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by the women’s game on FS1 at 12 p.m. ET. This event will uniquely combine global sports with a shared mission in the historic city of Rome.
Men’s Basketball Coach Kevin Willard described the event as a “special opportunity,” noting, “To represent Villanova in Rome to open our 2026-27 season is such a great honor. We appreciate the enormous effort that’s gone into making it possible.”
Head Women’s Basketball Coach Denise Dillon expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’re thrilled to tip off our 2026-27 season with this incredible event in Rome against a nationally recognized Notre Dame team.” This event is expected to create enduring memories for all participants, while also highlighting the university’s Augustinian mission.
The event serves as a testament to the core of Catholic higher education, where faith and learning converge in a historically and spiritually significant setting. It reflects on the shared mission of educational institutions to foster holistic development.
The event itinerary includes a welcome reception with a view of Rome, a shared Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, and a planned audience with Pope Leo XIV. Attendees will have access to cultural and academic experiences, including private Vatican tours and thematic programming around sports and spirituality.
