Lehigh’s Venture Studio: Transforming Research into Startups

Lehigh’s Venture Studio: Pioneering University-Driven Startups

In a groundbreaking move, Lehigh University has launched the Venture Studio, revolutionizing the process of transforming academic discoveries into successful independent startups. This innovative initiative integrates venture-building expertise directly into the university, assembling specialized teams to nurture and develop promising ideas from inception to market readiness.

As a prominent R1 university recognized under the Carnegie Classification, Lehigh continues to enhance its research capabilities. The Venture Studio plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between the university’s expanding research output and the creation of startups, aligning with its strategic priorities.

The Venture Studio employs a structured process to guide innovations from early discovery to market launch. Initially, promising intellectual property (IP) from the university is identified and evaluated for its commercial viability. Dedicated venture teams, comprising experienced startup builders, domain experts, and students from various academic levels, collaborate to explore market opportunities, refine business models, and assess if an idea can evolve into a successful company. This process results in a “startup package,” a venture ready for independent growth through licensing.

This approach enables faculty researchers to extend their work’s impact without leaving their academic positions. “Our goal is to make commercialization faculty-friendly,” stated Lisa Getzler, vice provost for entrepreneurship. “We want researchers to remain focused on discovery and teaching while the Studio provides the infrastructure and expertise needed to bring innovation to market.”

For students, the Venture Studio offers a practical learning environment centered on active participation. Students join venture teams, gaining valuable experience in opportunity analysis and venture strategy. Mithran Moses ’28, involved since the Venture Studio’s early days, remarked, “Being able to work with the Venture Studio has shown me how institutions have a genuine impact on the world.”

Sara Eleissawy ’26, an architecture major, found the Venture Studio to be a transformative experience. “The Venture Studio gave me a new way of thinking that’s been super eye-opening to me,” she said.

The initiative also fosters alumni engagement, providing opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors to license venture-ready startups and for industry leaders to mentor teams as Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. The Entrepreneurship Kitchen Cabinet, a group of seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, offers mentorship and strategic feedback, connecting ventures with industry networks.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence and alum Frank Balcavage ’01 expressed his enthusiasm, “As an alum, it’s very rewarding to help turn Lehigh’s faculty research into real-world impact.”

The Venture Studio’s launch was facilitated by a founding gift from Chris P’08 and Elaine McLeod P’08 and their son, Colin McLeod ’08 M’11, highlighting a shared belief in the power of ideas and innovation. University leaders view this gift as a catalyst for future growth through additional partnerships and investments.

With this initiative, Lehigh is taking a bold step to ensure its innovations extend beyond academic publications, contributing to shaping the future. “Every spinout ready startup package that comes through the Venture Studio is a bet that the next great company doesn’t have to start somewhere else,” Getzler stated. “We’re not waiting to see what the future looks like. We’re building it.”
