Exceptional teaching at the University of Iowa has been acknowledged through the 2026 Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching. Five distinguished faculty members have received this honor for their outstanding contributions to education, each known for their unique approach to curriculum and program development.
The award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium, celebrates faculty with at least six years of teaching experience at Iowa, recognizing their dedication in undergraduate, graduate, or professional education.
Theresa Bechtel: Innovator in Nursing Education
Theresa Bechtel, an associate professor in the College of Nursing, has made significant strides in incorporating real-world experience into her teaching. Her approach is characterized by immersive learning experiences that foster clinical judgment and teamwork among students. Bechtel has also integrated a training version of the electronic health record into her courses to mirror real clinical environments.

Stella Elias: Bridging Legal Systems
Professor Stella Elias a dual UK and US citizen, teacher in the College of Law and Bouma Family Fellow, has received acclaim for her courses in civil procedure and international law. Elias has played a crucial role in expanding the College of Law’s London Law Program, making it the largest study abroad option available from an American law school.
Her commitment to education is evident as she mentors numerous Iowa Law students, supporting both international students and those engaging in global studies.
Elizabeth Heineman: Champion of Civic Education
Elizabeth Heineman, a professor in the College of Liberal Arts and an advocate for civic education, has developed courses that emphasize the importance of historical knowledge in democracy. She actively engages students through interactive activities and peer-led collaborative methods, fostering an environment of open debate and inquiry.

Steyn has found innovative ways to highlight students’ strengths, leveraging their cultural and linguistic backgrounds to enhance the learning experience.
