Edward Castelo Appointed as New Warden of Wake Correctional Center

In a move that underscores his extensive experience in corrections management, Edward Castelo has been appointed as the new warden of Wake Correctional Center, a key re-entry facility in North Carolina.

Castelo’s career in corrections began in 2008 when he joined the Wake Correctional Center as a correctional officer. Demonstrating a strong commitment to the facility, he climbed the ranks to sergeant and lieutenant before transferring to the North Carolina Correctional Center for Women (NCCIW) in 2022. There, he excelled as a captain and compliance specialist, roles that prepared him for his new leadership position.

“Warden Castelo has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for leadership and for paying attention to details,” remarked Secretary Dismukes. “Having worked much of his career at Wake Correctional, he knows it well — from its security and operations requirements, to the needs of the people in custody there, who will be re-entering their communities shortly.”

Located on Rock Quarry Rd. in Raleigh, Wake Correctional Center serves as a minimum-custody re-entry facility, housing approximately 400 men. These individuals are nearing the end of their sentences, with two years or less remaining, and many participate in work release programs. They contribute to the community by working for private employers or aiding local and state government agencies during the day.

Castelo’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Southern New Hampshire University, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective correctional management.
