Hazing Incident Leads to Felony Indictment in NAU Student’s Tragic Death
An indictment related to the tragic death of a Northern Arizona University (NAU) student has been announced by the Coconino County Attorney’s Office. The student, who suffered from alcohol poisoning, was linked to a hazing incident, resulting in felony charges against an individual this afternoon, March 27.
The loss of the NAU student has deeply impacted the community, prompting widespread mourning and condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
Following the incident, NAU swiftly enacted an interim suspension of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity in accordance with university policies. The university has been actively cooperating with both the Flagstaff Police Department and the Coconino County Attorney’s Office during their investigation. Consequently, the National Delta Tau Delta Fraternity decided to permanently close its NAU chapter. While specific student disciplinary actions remain confidential, it has been confirmed that the individual facing hazing charges is no longer an NAU student.
To further address the situation, NAU has engaged an independent investigator to explore the circumstances surrounding the case and offer recommendations for future actions.
NAU stands firm in its stance against violence, hazing, and any behavior that endangers the safety of its community. Mandatory hazing prevention training is a requirement for all members involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life. The university maintains high standards for student and organizational conduct, emphasizing its dedication to learning from this tragic event and enhancing educational, preventative, and accountability measures to ensure the safety of the NAU community.
