Southwest Airlines Achieves Platinum in Dallas Green Business Certification

Southwest Airlines has achieved a notable milestone by becoming a part of the City of Dallas’ Certified Green Business list, showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Through the Dallas Green Business Certification Program, Southwest Airlines earned the prestigious Platinum certification for its headquarters and a Gold certification for its hangar facilities near Love Field. The Platinum status signifies exceptional dedication to eco-friendly practices and community engagement, setting a high standard for businesses in the program.

Southwest Airlines is actively working towards ambitious sustainability goals, including an energy roadmap aimed at halving the Energy Utilization Index (EUI) at its Dallas Headquarters by 2035, using 2019 data as a benchmark.

The airline’s efforts in energy efficiency were highlighted by perfect scores in the Energy category. It also performed well in the buildings, zero waste, and leadership and policy categories. Their sustainability initiatives further include a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with an interim goal of a 25% reduction by 2030, compared to 2019 figures. Southwest’s Green Team, active across the nation, underscores the company’s innovative approach and dedication to sustainability.

Understanding the Dallas Green Business Certification Program

Reintroduced in August 2025, the Dallas Green Business Certification Program is designed to recognize and promote local businesses that prioritize environmentally friendly practices. The initiative not only benefits the environment but also enhances business reliability and community engagement, ensuring lasting impacts.

Businesses within Dallas city limits are encouraged to participate, with applications available at no cost and open year-round. For further details, visit the program’s website at dallas.gov/greenbusiness.

Achieving Platinum Certification

To attain Platinum certification, businesses must score over 80 points on the sustainability scorecard. This scorecard evaluates green actions across various categories, including buildings, energy, transportation, and ecosystems, aligning with the Dallas Comprehensive Environmental and Climate Action Plan (CECAP) and additional leadership and industry-specific questions.
