University of Iowa Recognizes Staff Excellence at Annual Awards Ceremony

The University of Iowa is set to honor its outstanding staff members at the upcoming Faculty and Staff Awards ceremony. Scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, the event will take place at Hancher Auditorium, celebrating those who have made significant contributions to the university and the state of Iowa.

Recognizing Excellence: Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award

This prestigious award acknowledges staff members for their remarkable achievements and vital contributions that enhance the University of Iowa’s reputation and positively influence the state.

Marie Adams serves as the assistant training director at the University Counseling Service. Her efforts in clinical training and suicide prevention have significantly bolstered the university’s mental health systems. As co-chair of the UI Suicide Prevention Coalition, Adams has been pivotal in expanding prevention initiatives and certifying crisis care specialists.

Amy O’Deen, a senior assistant director for clinical enterprise at UI Health Care, has devoted four decades to patient-centered care. Her leadership was instrumental in the establishment of the new UI Health Care Medical Center North Liberty, enhancing healthcare accessibility across Iowa.

Stratis Giannakouros, director of the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, has led the University of Iowa to national recognition for its renewable energy use and environmental stewardship. His initiatives integrate sustainability into university operations, research, and community partnerships.

Ryan Jepson, manager of the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, has driven key testing and outbreak response efforts that safeguard public health in Iowa. His leadership in developing wastewater surveillance for infectious diseases highlights his significant contributions to public health monitoring.

Brian Rechkemmer, program director of Simulation in Motion–Iowa, has expanded emergency medical training across all Iowa counties. His dedication to improving emergency care education has elevated Iowa’s standing in mobile health care simulation.

Joni Troester, a senior assistant vice president and deputy chief human resources officer, has advanced employee experience strategies at the university. Her leadership in workplace well-being, including the liveWELL program, has earned national recognition.

University of Iowa Outstanding Staff Award

This award celebrates staff members whose outstanding contributions significantly benefit or bring recognition to the university.

Kate Ralston, a data scientist in Enrollment Management, leads data analytics that guide enrollment decisions and student success initiatives, particularly during major educational shifts like test-optional admissions.

Kirsten Hanrahan, director of Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice, has played a crucial role in integrating research into clinical practice. Her work on the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice has influenced health care organizations worldwide.

Nicole Weathers oversees the Iowa Online Nurse Residency Program, transforming it into a nationally recognized initiative that supports new graduate nurses and strengthens nursing education and workforce retention.

Steph Beecher, the basic needs coordinator, addresses essential student needs such as food insecurity and housing stability. Her efforts have significantly expanded access to basic resources for students.

Shannon Ortiz, a clinical research assistant, contributes to sports medicine research and coordinates complex clinical trials, enhancing the university’s reputation in orthopedic outcomes research.

Merry Aamodt, a human resources leader, manages the CLAS human resources transaction hub, ensuring efficient and accurate employee transactions and fostering a positive environment.

David J. Skorton Staff Excellence Award in Service to the University of Iowa

This award honors staff members for their exceptional service that improves the university community beyond their normal job responsibilities.

Shonda Monette, departmental administrator for the Department of Chemistry, excels in operational excellence and collaboration. Her leadership in shared governance and employee recognition programs is noteworthy.

Emily Sargent, a staff nurse in the Emergency Department, enhances patient care and staff engagement. Her mentorship and professional development initiatives have had a lasting impact.

Richard E. Gibson Merit Staff Award for Innovation and Excellence in Customer Service

This award celebrates creativity and exceptional customer service achievements that exceed job expectations.

Kris Bevelacqua, an administrative professional in the Department of Rhetoric, plays a crucial role in supporting academic and administrative operations. Her mentorship and management skills are invaluable.

Dorian Bright-Walker manages employee learning and professional development, significantly impacting the university community through initiatives like the My Training system and online training expansion during the pandemic.

The Staff Award for Welcoming and Respectful Environment

This award acknowledges staff members who foster a welcoming workplace and engage with diverse viewpoints.

Vonda Semler, a concierge at UI Health Care’s Medical Center North Liberty, developed the Patient Assistance Program to support patients and visitors in need, enhancing the hospital’s welcoming environment.

Sarah Butler, rural residency program coordinator, expands psychiatry training programs in rural Iowa. Her leadership and collaboration strengthen statewide partnerships and support a culture of respect and innovation.
