Michigan and Finland Reinforce Partnership in Clean Tech and Advanced Mobility
In a move to bolster international cooperation, Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan has signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. This initiative, originally established in 2020, seeks to enhance collaboration in clean technologies, advanced mobility, and other critical industries. The updated agreement aims to further integrate efforts in innovation and economic development between Michigan and Finland.
“Michigan and Finland share a long history of innovation, collaboration, and the spirit of sisu,” stated Governor Whitmer. “By expanding our partnership, we will continue to bring together our world-class researchers, businesses, and industry leaders to create new technology, strengthen supply chains, and create good-paying jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. This agreement will keep Michigan in the lead on advanced manufacturing, mobility, and energy while deepening our ties with a key ally.”
The signing ceremony, which took place during a visit from Finnish Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Leena-Kaisa Mikkola, marks an important step in international cooperation. The MOU outlines joint efforts in fields such as mobility innovation, battery technology, sustainable forestry, and defense industries. The agreement also emphasizes the significance of transatlantic cooperation to combat climate change and enhance economic resilience through secure supply chains.
“Finland greatly values its close partnership with Michigan, whose dynamic innovation ecosystem and strong industrial base make it an ideal partner,” said Ambassador Mikkola. “We are proud to see the concrete results achieved so far, including new business and research projects as well as exchanges of professionals, and we are excited to deepen our cooperation in new domains.”
Matt McCauley, Senior Vice President of Regional Development at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), highlighted the economic benefits of the agreement. “This agreement creates more opportunities for companies, researchers, and industry partners in both Michigan and Finland to work together in key sectors, helping strengthen our regional economies and positioning Michigan as a global hub for advanced industry.”
The collaborative efforts extend to the academic field as well, with Michigan State University (MSU) playing a pivotal role in forestry research. The university’s Department of Forestry maintains a strong relationship with Finnish academic institutions, focusing on sustainable forestry practices and education.
“International experiences help us see things in new ways,” noted Rich Kobe, Chairperson of the Department of Forestry at MSU. “MSU Forestry’s relationship with Finnish universities and researchers advances the innovation of sustainable forestry and forest products for both Michigan and Finland. We are delighted that the Michigan-Finland MOU is continuing.”
Tim Boring, Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized the cultural and historical ties that make this partnership meaningful. “Today’s agreement will help boost innovation, efficiency, and resiliency in our respective forestry sectors, creating new economic opportunities and strengthening communities from Hancock to Helsinki.”
The MOU outlines several areas of potential collaboration, including the sharing of policies and regulations, developing market opportunities for clean technologies, and fostering direct partnerships between public and private sectors. The agreement, set to last for five years, can be renewed by mutual consent, ensuring long-term collaboration between Michigan and Finland.
