Commissioner Urges North Carolinians to Prepare for Severe Storms

North Carolina Residents Advised to Brace for Severe Weather

As severe storms loom over North Carolina, residents are being called upon to exercise caution and prepare for potential weather threats. The state is poised to face significant thunderstorm and tornado activity, with the central region under a heightened threat level.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the majority of North Carolina is at risk today, with a Level 4 risk designation in central areas—a severity not seen in years. This elevated risk underscores the need for immediate preparedness across the state.

“I urge residents to take these severe weather warnings seriously and be aware,” Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey stated. He emphasized the importance of advance preparation: “Secure your home and protect your family before these storms arrive.”

Preparation Recommendations

  • Monitor local TV and radio broadcasts for real-time weather updates and guidance.
  • Identify a secure location within your home, such as a small interior room, to seek refuge in case of severe weather. Avoid mobile homes during intense storms and find alternative shelter.
  • Ensure that outdoor items such as furniture, trash cans, and plants are secured to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
  • Trim any dead or weak branches on trees near your home to reduce the risk of damage.
  • Park vehicles in a garage or away from trees when possible to protect them from storm damage.
  • Create a video inventory of your home’s contents for insurance documentation.
