Flint Releases Partially Treated Wastewater Due to Storm Surge
FLINT, Mich. – On the morning of March 7, 2026, the Flint Water Pollution Control Facility experienced an overflow, resulting in the release of a blend of stormwater and partially treated sewage into the Flint River. This discharge event occurred at 8:20 a.m. and was attributed to intense wet-weather conditions that overwhelmed the city’s wastewater treatment capabilities.
The surge was caused by an influx of rainwater and stormwater that entered the sewer system, surpassing the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s capacity for comprehensive secondary sewage treatment. While the facility is equipped with a Retention and Treatment Basin designed to manage excess inflows, the volume of stormwater necessitated the release of disinfected wastewater to prevent overcapacity at both the basin and the plant.
Residents and stakeholders can access the results of water sample tests related to this incident on the State of Michigan’s website, where updates will be made available.
