Emillian’s Journey: From Server to CDL Driver with ARIZONA@WORK

Journey from Server to CDL Driver: Emillian’s Career Shift

An inspiring journey unfolds as Emillian transitions from a server at Famous Dave’s and a former employee at Harkins Theatres to pursuing a career in truck driving. Motivated by his father’s career path, Emillian embarked on a new endeavor with ARIZONA@WORK Maricopa County, showcasing his dedication and communication prowess. However, the path to becoming a CDL driver was not without its challenges.

Initially, Emillian encountered a hurdle when his chosen truck driving school wasn’t eligible for the WIOA grant, despite being listed online. This confusion led to discussions with the school’s owner, who mistakenly believed they were an approved provider. After two months of resolving the issue and gaining state approval, Emillian chose to wait while engaging in relevant workshops and maintaining part-time work.

His journey in truck driver training began at John Wheeler School in Mesa in March 2025. Within a week, Emillian showed promising progress towards obtaining his permit. The school soon reported his successful completion of Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT), noting his exceptional performance. Despite initial setbacks with the pre-check portion of the state exam, Emillian persevered with additional practice and support, eventually passing his CDL exam by August 1, 2025.

Armed with a CDL license, Emillian prepared to launch his career as a Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver. Although his resume was general, Emillian received guidance on tailoring it for CDL roles. His career advisor provided job leads and assistance through Arizona Job Connection and Maricopa County’s Job Blast. By mid-October, Emillian began an entry-level training program with Swift, earning $650 per week with prospects for career advancement. Emillian expressed gratitude for the program’s support as he exited the youth program, marking a significant milestone in his career journey.
