Major Demolition Underway at Dallas Convention Center
Significant developments are taking place at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas (KBHCCD) as the city initiates a large-scale demolition project. This step is pivotal for constructing a state-of-the-art convention center and adjacent district.
The demolition process has commenced on Halls D, E, and F, setting the stage for the new facility. This follows extensive preparatory activities, including utility adjustments and site readiness.
During this transformation, Halls A, B, and C will remain functional, allowing the convention center to host the FIFA World Cup 2026 International Broadcast Center until August 2026. Post-World Cup, ongoing events will continue in these sections while phased demolition and construction proceed.
City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert remarked, “Today marks a major milestone in a transformation years in the making,” emphasizing the strategic vision and fiscal prudence guiding the project.
The demolition plan includes careful dismantling of the structure over Lamar Street. Portions of Halls D, E, and F will be systematically taken down once structural separations are completed.
A section of Hall F, spanning the DART and Union Pacific rail lines, will remain intact to safeguard essential infrastructure, though the above-ground portion will be removed.
The DART convention center station’s closure will persist through construction, though trains will maintain operations. DART riders can find more information on temporary detours here.
Ensuring uninterrupted rail service is critical, as numerous Union Pacific freight trains traverse the area daily. Major demolition works are anticipated to conclude by late 2026, aiming for project completion by 2029.
The revamped center will offer around 750,000 square feet of exhibition space, 105,000 square feet for ballrooms, and 180,000 square feet for meeting areas.
Director of Convention and Event Services, Rosa Fleming, highlighted the ongoing efforts to manage events during the transition, stating, “This milestone reflects the extensive planning and collaboration behind the scenes to keep events operating while we transform the site.”
Economically, the project has already secured commitments for 70 major conventions post-2029, projecting a $1.9 billion economic impact.
Financial backing is secured through Hotel Occupancy Tax and Project Financing Zone revenues, generating over $224 million. A $1 billion bridge loan, approved in 2025, facilitates project advancement, with revenue bonds planned for 2026 issuance.
Beyond the convention center, the project aims to create a vibrant, walkable district linking downtown to The Cedars and southern Dallas, unlocking 30+ acres for potential development.
