As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, Maricopa County is stepping up to commemorate this significant milestone. Through a series of community-driven events and educational programs, the county aims to bring people together to celebrate the nation’s history and envision a promising future.
Chair Kate Brophy McGee, representing District 3, remarked, “America250 is an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history while looking forward to the future we are building together. Maricopa County’s programs will encourage civic pride and meaningful engagement from residents across our region.”
Supervisor Thomas Galvin of District 2, who has been appointed to lead the county’s America250 celebrations, emphasized the local community’s role in shaping the nation, saying, “Commemorating 250 years of American history is about recognizing the role local communities play in shaping our nation. Maricopa County is proud to honor the principles of freedom, civic responsibility, and community that have defined our country for 250 years. We invite residents of all ages to participate in these celebrations and share in this historic milestone.”
Initiatives for America250 in Maricopa County
To mark this historic occasion, Maricopa County has lined up several activities that residents can engage in:
America250 Essay Contest: Students and educators throughout Maricopa County are encouraged to write essays focusing on American history, civic duty, and the nation’s future. The winners will receive recognition at an upcoming meeting of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
Patriotic Pets Contest: Pet owners can submit photos of their pets adorned in patriotic themes via the County website. The best entries will be highlighted on Maricopa County’s social media platforms. In addition, Maricopa County Animal Care & Control will join in by showcasing shelter pets dressed patriotically.
Lighting Up the County: The Maricopa County Administration Building at 301 W. Jefferson St. will be illuminated in the national colors of red, white, and blue during specific America250 celebration times.
Community Engagement and Resources: Residents can stay informed about America250 activities on a dedicated webpage, Maricopa.Gov/America250, which will be updated throughout the year with new information and events.
