A New Art Installation at Dix Park Explores Mental Health Themes
An intriguing new art installation is set to debut at the historic Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, focusing on the complex realities of mental health. The unveiling event will take place on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 10 a.m., inviting both the public and credentialed media to explore this meaningful addition. The installation, titled “Get Well Soon,” is the creation of local artist and licensed mental health counselor Lamar Whidbee.
Located at the Spruill Building, a former mental health facility that began operations in 1856, the artwork is part of the park’s Arts & Culture program. It features a poignant image of Whidbee’s daughter holding a flower, surrounded by vibrant floral designs. These elements pay tribute to the mental health journeys of individuals and communities linked to Whidbee’s work.
The event aims not only to introduce this evocative artwork to the community but also to serve as a reflective and educational experience. It underscores the significance of mental health services and honors the legacy of the Spruill Building and those who have been connected to it.
