Hancher Auditorium Gains Recognition on Billboard’s 2026 Top Music Venues List
Billboard magazine has included Hancher Auditorium on its prestigious 2026 Top Music Venues list, aligning it with renowned stadiums and theaters globally. This recognition highlights Hancher’s role in the indie music scene, as it stands out in Billboard’s “Keeping It Indie” category.
In this category, 28 venues were selected based on region, capacity, and unique attributes identified by Billboard staff. Among the noted venues are The Sphere in Las Vegas, recognized as the Top West Coast Arena, and Preservation Hall in New Orleans, celebrated for its Best Concept.
Billboard describes Hancher Auditorium as a “quiet powerhouse for indie touring in the Midwest,” emphasizing its blend of concert hall precision with an intimate feel. The venue has hosted notable artists such as Stereolab, Jason Isbell, and Neko Case. Its outstanding acoustics, adaptable lighting, and excellent sightlines, combined with a supportive setting and efficient operations, make it a sought-after stage for performers.
The magazine also mentions that Hancher’s location at the University of Iowa attracts a diverse audience, including college students and local fans. Visitors can enjoy pre-show strolls along the Iowa River or explore nearby cafes and galleries, linking Iowa City’s creative energy with the global live-music scene.
André Perry, the executive director of Hancher Auditorium and the University of Iowa’s Office of Performing Arts and Engagement, expressed his excitement about the recognition. He stated, “Everything we do is about teamwork: taking care of our artists behind the scenes, connecting students with performers in the classroom, honoring and preserving this incredible building, and welcoming every patron who visits us.”
Since its founding in 1972, Hancher has been a cornerstone for creativity within the campus and the Iowa City community. It hosts a diverse range of performances and events annually, including touring artists, Broadway shows, student performances, and community gatherings. Hancher is a central component of Performing Arts at Iowa, working in collaboration with the Department of Dance, Department of Theatre Arts, Performing Arts Production Unit, and the School of Music.
The current building, which opened in September 2016, replaced the original auditorium that was demolished after the 2008 flood. Located just north of the original site along the Iowa River, the main auditorium seats 1,800, while the smaller Strauss Hall accommodates 200. These spaces are designed to foster a sense of intimacy between performers and audiences, with adjustable stage walls and acoustics-enhancing curves.
Hancher integrates its visiting artist programs into the University of Iowa curriculum through collaborations with the departments of Dance and Theatre Arts, the School of Music, and other units. In the 2024–25 academic year, visiting artists engaged with over 1,700 students, aiding them in developing skills for success in creative and professional fields.
Perry sees Hancher as “an incubator for creativity and community at the university,” emphasizing its role as a hub for arts, culture, and discovery. He added, “When you come here, you might be inspired to make art or have a breakthrough with a big idea or feel at home with new or old friends.”
Ensuring access to the arts is a key part of Hancher’s mission. In the 2024–25 season, the auditorium welcomed over 10,000 University of Iowa students and provided arts and education experiences to 1,400 local K–12 students.
The 2025–26 season featured major events, such as the Fall Welcome Concert attended by more than 5,000 people, and interdisciplinary projects like the Trisha Brown Dance Company’s visit in collaboration with various university departments. Perry highlighted the diverse experiences available at Hancher, including performances by rock band Goose and the Minnesota Orchestra, as well as comedian Josh Johnson’s new material on the Hancher stage.
