In an effort to enhance navigation and user experience, Cambus has introduced a fresh design for its bus stop signs. This update is aimed at making the public transit system more user-friendly for both regular users and newcomers. “We hope the new signs make our system simpler and more intuitive to use for both frequent riders and visitors on campus,” stated Mia Brunelli, Cambus manager.
The last significant update to the Cambus signage occurred in 2010, coinciding with the launch of the Bongo app, which allowed riders to track bus routes in real-time. The current redesign not only addresses the issues of outdated and worn-out signs but also seeks to improve clarity and usability for a better overall rider experience. This initiative is part of a broader effort to incorporate valuable insights and best practices from the Iowa City Area Transit Study.
Feedback was solicited from various stakeholders during the design process, including Cambus staff, the UI Parking and Transportation Charter Committee, Coralville Transit, and Iowa City Transit. This collaborative approach ensured that the new signage would meet the needs of all users.
To access real-time bus information without the Transit app, riders can call or text the numbers provided on the signs and input the specific stop number. Notably, shared bus stops serviced by multiple transit providers are marked with a green heading. The signs also include route numbers and colors, which were implemented following the 2020 Iowa City Area Transit Study. Each transit system has allocated distinct colors and numbers to its routes, aiding in quick and easy identification.
Real-time information signs are also being installed at shared stops, allowing riders to receive automated updates via mobile app, call, or text. By 2026, each transit system will maintain separate contact numbers for obtaining real-time bus information without needing a smart device.
