Florida’s Commitment to School Choice Strengthened by Federal Tax Credit
Tallahassee, Fla.—In a significant move to bolster school choice options, Governor Ron DeSantis has confirmed that Florida will join the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit initiative, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This new program is designed to further enhance educational opportunities for Florida families.
Governor DeSantis highlighted Florida’s leadership in school choice, noting, “Florida families have access to the nation’s top ranked and largest school choice program. About 1.4 million students are enrolled in school choice options in Florida—more than most other states’ entire K-12 school population.” He emphasized that the federal program will provide additional resources for families already benefiting from state scholarships.
Starting January 1, 2027, Floridians contributing to this initiative can claim a tax credit of up to $1,700 annually, aimed at supporting K-12 educational expenses. This decision reinforces Florida’s commitment to giving families the autonomy to decide their children’s educational paths.
Florida has consistently led the nation in educational freedom. Since 2023, universal school choice has been available, ensuring every family can select the educational environment that suits them best. Currently, nearly 50% of Florida students attend private, charter, virtual, or homeschool settings.
The state’s efforts have been recognized nationally. For the fourth consecutive year, the Heritage Foundation has ranked Florida first in Education Freedom, applauding its achievements in Education Choice, Civic Education, Academic Transparency, and Teacher Freedom. The ALEC Index of State Education Freedom also placed Florida at the forefront for the third year running, highlighting its excellence in student-centered funding, charter schools, and homeschooling. Furthermore, the Center for Education Reform has consistently ranked Florida top on the Parent Power Index, acknowledging the state’s focus on Transformational Learning, charter schools, and choice programs.
