Hope Bibens Appointed as Dean of Drake University’s Cowles Library

Hope Bibens Appointed New Dean of Cowles Library at Drake University

Drake University is pleased to announce that Hope Bibens will step into the role of dean at Cowles Library, following her current position as the associate dean. Her new responsibilities will commence on July 1, 2026.

The decision to appoint Bibens was made by the Drake University Board of Trustees during their January executive session, after receiving a recommendation from university leadership. As dean, she will oversee library operations, manage archival collections, and enhance student research services.

Drake University Provost Sue Mattison expressed enthusiasm for Bibens’s new role, stating, “We are thrilled to have Hope step into this vital leadership role. As associate dean, Hope has already demonstrated a deep commitment to the mission of Cowles Library and the success of our students. Her knowledge of the Drake community and her vision for the future of academic libraries make her the perfect successor to continue the library’s legacy of excellence.”

Extensive Experience and Dedication to the University

Bibens’s career at Drake University began in 2014, and she has since held numerous roles, including Associate Professor of Librarianship, Associate Dean of Cowles Library, and Director of University Archives and Special Collections. Her involvement also extends to serving as Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletic Council and acting as Drake University’s Faculty Athletics Representative.

Reflecting on her new position, Bibens remarked, “Drake University represents a unique community where the library serves as a cornerstone for both innovation and tradition. I am honored to lead our dedicated team and look forward to building even stronger relationships with faculty, staff, and students as we evolve to meet the needs of not just our University, but the changing world.”

Transition Following Dean Teri Koch’s Retirement

Bibens will succeed Dean Teri Koch, who has served the university diligently and will enter a transitional sabbatical starting July 1, 2026, before her official retirement at the end of the year.

“Dean Koch has been a crucial member of our academic community for nearly 40 years,” said Mattison. “Her leadership at Cowles Library has ensured our library remains a vibrant hub for student discovery and collaborative research. We are deeply grateful for her years of service and her dedication to the University.”
