LANSING, Mich. – Niles has taken a significant step forward in its quest to attract private investment and enhance municipal assets, having been awarded the Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) certification. This designation, announced by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), recognizes Niles as a community fully prepared in planning and zoning efforts.
The certification positions Niles among a select group of Michigan communities recognized for their comprehensive readiness to welcome investment by overcoming traditional development barriers. To see all certified communities, click here.
“Our mission at MEDC is to support Michigan’s strong economic momentum and empower communities to establish a strong planning, zoning and economic development foundation,” said MEDC SVP of Community Planning & Development Readiness Michele Wildman. “The City of Niles is well-positioned to continue to implement their vision for the future and further improve the quality of life for its residents. We look forward to building upon our relationship with the City of Niles and supporting local economic development efforts.”
The RRC certification came after a thorough evaluation of Niles’ current community and economic development practices against established best practices. Utilizing the RRC toolkit, Niles has integrated transparency, predictability, and efficiency into its local development strategies. This certification signals that Niles is competitive and attractive for prospective investments.
“Achieving the Redevelopment Ready Communities certification shows that Niles is serious about smart, sustained growth,” stated Mayor Nick Shelton. “We’ve done the critical work to make it easier and more appealing for developers and businesses to invest here, and that investment translates directly into new jobs, quality housing, and stronger neighborhoods for our residents. This certification is our clear signal that Niles is ready to compete for the kind of vital projects that move our community forward.”
As a certified community, Niles will gain access to new tools to advance its development goals, along with ongoing support and technical assistance from the RRC team. The certification remains valid for five years, with annual check-ins to ensure continued adherence to best practices.
