Guide to Recycling Christmas Trees and Holiday Cleanup in Dallas

How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree in Dallas

As the holiday season wraps up, many Dallas residents face the annual challenge of figuring out how to dispose of festive decorations. While items like ornaments and worn-out toys might cause a few headaches, the disposal of Christmas trees is a common concern. Fortunately, the City of Dallas provides a straightforward solution for recycling natural Christmas trees.

Natural Christmas trees are not suitable for the blue recycling cart, but they can still be recycled. By taking your live tree to either the City landfill or one of the transfer stations, you help divert organic waste from the landfill and contribute to sustainable practices.

Residents can drop off their natural Christmas trees, stripped of all decorations, from December 26, 2025, through January 24, 2026. The drop-off locations include McCommas Bluff Landfill and several transfer stations in Dallas. The trees collected here are turned into mulch, which is then used for road and drainage projects at McCommas Bluff.

If you prefer, you can also leave your tree out for the scheduled brush and bulky item collection. However, this method does not guarantee that the tree will be recycled, as it may get mixed with other waste materials.

To prepare your tree for recycling, ensure all lights, tinsel, and ornaments are removed. Do not place the tree in a bag or wrap it. Artificial trees, due to their construction from mixed materials, are not recyclable. They can be disposed of at a landfill, transfer station, or as part of the brush and bulky item collection.

By participating in the recycling program, you contribute to a cleaner, greener Dallas. For more information on drop-off locations and operation hours, visit Dallas.gov/Sanitation.
