Fortescue Invests $550M in Arizona Hydrogen, Boosts Clean Energy Sector

Fortescue’s Green Hydrogen Initiative in Arizona: A Bold Move Towards Sustainability

A significant leap towards green energy production is underway in Buckeye, Arizona, where Fortescue has embarked on a $550 million project to produce liquid green hydrogen. This initiative marks the company’s first green energy investment in North America, symbolized by the recent renaming of the facility to Arizona Hydrogen.

On May 2, Fortescue celebrated this venture with a soil turn event attended by prominent figures such as Fortescue Executive Chair Dr. Andrew Forrest AO, Gila River Indian Community Governor Steven Roe Lewis, Sandra Watson from the Arizona Commerce Authority, and Buckeye Mayor Eric Orsborn.

Dr. Forrest emphasized the progress made under the Biden Administration towards energy transition but noted the need for further efforts. He stated, The U.S. has made serious strides in attracting global investment in green hydrogen and decarbonization projects, like Fortescue’s solar and wind-powered Arizona Hydrogen facility. Fortescue is unashamedly a first-mover in this space, the world needs us to move quickly. He also expressed hope that the administration would enhance support for the green hydrogen sector by refining the 45V tax credits.

Economic projections by NDP Analytics suggest that during its two-year construction phase, the Arizona Hydrogen project could generate up to 2,244 jobs, contributing $124.2 million in wages and $187.8 million to Arizona’s GDP. The venture could also yield $31.7 million in income and sales taxes for the state.

Once operational, Arizona Hydrogen is expected to create 431 jobs, offering $29.3 million in wages, and adding $59.2 million annually to the state’s GDP, with $9.1 million in taxes.

Governor Steven Roe Lewis highlighted the cultural and environmental significance of the project, stating, In recognizing and honoring the traditional lands of the Akimel O’otham and Pee Posh people, we have a profound connection and shared responsibility as stewards of the earth. Companies like Fortescue are helping to pave the way for a more sustainable and equitable future for our generations to come.

With a production capacity of up to 11,000 tons of liquid green hydrogen annually, the facility aims to significantly impact the decarbonization of the heavy-duty transport sector in the southwest, where diesel consumption is notably high.
