As of December 11, 2025, Dallas will enforce a new vaping ordinance that aligns with existing smoking bans, following a year-long transition period for residents and businesses to adapt.
Initially approved by the Dallas City Council on December 11, 2024, this ordinance aims to improve air quality and protect public health by including vaping under the already established smoking restrictions. Proposed by the City of Dallas Environmental Commission and the Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability, the ordinance updates the Dallas City Code to treat electronic smoking devices the same as traditional smoking. Consequently, vaping is now prohibited in all places where smoking is not allowed.
Under the new rules, vaping is banned in all indoor and enclosed areas, within 15 feet of building entrances, and on park properties. Notably, this amendment does not introduce any new restricted locations.
Assistant City Manager Liz Cedillo-Pereira expressed support for the ordinance, stating, “I am proud of this effort to keep the air cleaner for all of us. The largest cities in Texas are now aligned to protect people at work as well as the public from secondary exposure to potentially harmful substances. It’s time to comply.”
Additionally, businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and gyms are required to update their signs to clearly indicate that both smoking and vaping are prohibited.
Angela Hodges Gott, Director of the Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability, emphasized the communal benefits, noting, “We’re all connected through our environment. Keeping our places of business, parks, creeks, and rivers clean is something everyone benefits from. When we reduce vaping and smoking litter, we’re protecting the vibrancy of Dallas.”
