Leadership Transition Announced at North Carolina Department of Transportation
In a significant leadership transition, Governor Josh Stein has honored the long-standing service of Joey Hopkins, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), as he prepares to retire. The announcement also introduced Daniel Johnson, a Navy veteran and current NCDOT Deputy Secretary, as the newly appointed Secretary of Transportation, effective October 1.
“Secretary Hopkins has served at the Department of Transportation for more than 30 years and was planning for his retirement until Hurricane Helene struck our state,” remarked Governor Josh Stein. “I asked him to delay his retirement to help steer us through the early phases of recovery and rebuilding. I am so grateful that he did, and we have reopened 97% of our state-maintained roads. He is a true public servant, beloved across the state and across the aisle, and I wish him a joyful retirement with his family.”
During his tenure, Hopkins played a crucial role as NCDOT’s chief operating officer before ascending to the role of Secretary. His efforts in developing the Strategic Prioritization Process were instrumental in utilizing existing funds more effectively, supporting infrastructure enhancement, economic growth, job creation, and improving the quality of life in North Carolina. Under his leadership, a remarkable 97% of roads affected by Hurricane Helene were reopened within a year.
“It has been an honor to serve as Secretary of Transportation, and I am grateful to all the North Carolinians who put their trust in our team,” stated Secretary of Transportation Joey Hopkins. “Daniel Johnson has been a valuable advisor to me, and I am proud to pass the torch to him.”
Daniel Johnson, who has served as Deputy Secretary and General Counsel since 2019, brings a diverse background to his new role. Prior to his tenure at NCDOT, Johnson practiced law privately, served as an assistant district attorney in Wake County, and was a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy. A recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism, he is a native of Hickory, North Carolina, and holds degrees in both undergraduate studies and law from the University of North Carolina.
“Secretary Hopkins leaves a legacy of leadership that I can only hope to continue,” expressed Daniel Johnson. “We must continue the task of building a transportation system that meets the needs of our growing state, and I am eager to get to work.”
Governor Stein emphasized the ongoing challenges and opportunities in strengthening North Carolina’s infrastructure, particularly in the western regions. “With his record of public service, leadership, and expertise in transportation, Daniel Johnson is the right person for the job. I welcome him to the role and look forward to working together to build a safer, stronger, and better-connected North Carolina,” he added.
