Republican Budget Cuts Threaten Medicaid and Food Aid for Nevadans

The recent passage of a controversial budget bill by Republicans has sparked significant debate, largely due to its planned reductions in Medicaid and food assistance for Nevadans. The bill, which aims to fund substantial tax cuts for the wealthy, could see 100,000 residents lose Medicaid coverage and more than 500,000 Nevadans affected by cuts to food programs, while increasing the national deficit by $3.3 trillion.

In response to the bill, Congresswoman Susie Lee held a press conference with healthcare providers, emphasizing the negative impact these Medicaid cuts would have on health services in Nevada. Meanwhile, Congressman Steven Horsford criticized Republicans during committee hearings, accusing them of prioritizing Donald Trump’s agenda over the needs of working citizens. Similarly, Congresswoman Dina Titus voiced concerns about a specific provision that could adversely affect Nevada’s gaming sector by restricting loss deductions.

Senator Jacky Rosen proposed an amendment to support clean energy tax credits aimed at boosting the economy, but it was blocked in favor of tax benefits for billionaires. Concurrently, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has been actively sharing stories from Nevadans affected by the bill, highlighting the real-world impact on their health and finances.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has taken to both local and national media to share his personal experience of relying on Medicaid and SNAP benefits during his time as a single father in college. He continues to advocate against the bill, emphasizing the need for essential programs for working families.
