Upcoming NCDHHS Virtual Event to Highlight Vaccine Importance and Disaster Recovery Resources
As seasonal illnesses loom, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is set to engage the public in a key discussion about vaccines and community health support. On Tuesday, November 12, from 6 to 7 p.m., the department will host a fireside chat and tele-town hall focused on the protective measures against prevalent respiratory diseases and the resources available post-Hurricane Helene.
The initiative, initially planned for October, was postponed due to Hurricane Helene. In light of the hurricane’s impact, the event will also address health-related recovery resources.
The virtual gathering will feature insights from several health experts, including:
- Kelly Kimple, M.D., MPH, Acting Director, Division of Public Health, NCDHHS
- Martez C. L. Prince, Pharm.D., RPh, CEO/Pharmacy Director, Premier Pharmacy and Wellness Center
- Leatrice Martin, MBA, CHES, Public Health Education Lead, North Carolina Central University Center for Health Disparities and Research
With the flu and COVID-19 season approaching, it’s crucial for individuals aged 6 months and older to receive their updated vaccinations. These vaccines have been adapted to combat the most recent virus strains, aiming to reduce severe illness and complications, especially for vulnerable groups such as young children, seniors, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.
Additionally, RSV vaccines are now available for older adults and pregnant women, while certain young children may require additional immunization for enhanced protection against RSV.
The panel will cover several vital topics, including:
- Guidance on obtaining flu and COVID-19 vaccines
- Information on RSV protection and vaccines
- Locating healthcare providers and accessing medical services
- Strategies to safeguard oneself and family from seasonal illnesses
- Access to complimentary vaccines for children
Staying current with vaccinations is essential for safely partaking in seasonal festivities and events. Prompt COVID-19 testing is advised for anyone experiencing symptoms to curb spreading the virus. Free at-home COVID-19 tests are accessible through over 300 community organizations. The fireside chat will be streamed live on the NCDHHS Facebook and YouTube pages, allowing real-time viewer questions. Participants can also join the tele-town hall by calling 855-756-7520 Ext. 112990#.
