Drake University Theatre Arts Debuts “Urinetown” for Fall Semester Finale
The culmination of Drake University’s fall theatre season is fast approaching with the anticipated performance of “Urinetown,” a satirical musical comedy that has captured audiences worldwide. This full-length production, featuring music by Mark Hollmann and lyrics by Greg Kotis, will be staged at the Performing Arts Hall within the Harmon Fine Arts Center on Drake’s campus. Evening performances are scheduled for November 19–21 at 7:30 p.m., with matinee shows on November 21 and 22 at 2 p.m.
Under the direction of Erin Degner, with music direction by Shelley Cooper, both of whom are associate professors of theatre at Drake, “Urinetown” promises to deliver a memorable experience. The Tony Award-winning musical presents a dystopian world plagued by a severe water shortage that forces the public to rely on paid toilet facilities operated by the monopolistic “Urine Good Company.” Defying this oppressive system leads to severe consequences, as those who break the law are banished to the enigmatic “Urinetown.”
Central to the story is Bobby Strong, a young man who rallies the citizens to challenge the unjust policies. This comedic yet thought-provoking musical critiques various societal themes, including capitalism, environmental issues, and the privatization of natural resources, while also parodying the world of musical theatre.
Tickets for “Urinetown” can be purchased online or by calling the Drake University Fine Arts Box Office at 515-271-3841.
