University of Iowa Plans Renovations for Historic IMU Footbridge
The University of Iowa has announced plans to renovate the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) footbridge, aiming to preserve this vital campus connection for years to come. Approval for the project will be sought at the Iowa Board of Regents’ meeting in November.
Built in 1938, the footbridge has served as a crucial link for generations of Hawkeyes between the east and west sides of the campus. Despite its age, the bridge remains safe and structurally sound, but it shows signs of wear and tear that the proposed renovations intend to address.
The renovation project will include replacing the aging decking and railings, repainting steel supports, repairing rust-affected areas, and patching concrete on the east side stairs. The walkway leading to the east side of the bridge is slated for improvements in a subsequent phase. These updates are designed to extend the bridge’s lifespan while maintaining its historical significance.
Pending approval, construction is set to commence during spring break in March 2027, with completion targeted for November 2027. To minimize disruption, the bridge will remain accessible to pedestrians for most of the project duration but will close from May through August 2027, coinciding with the break between spring and fall semesters.
This renovation initiative underscores the university’s commitment to maintaining its infrastructure while preserving the campus’s historical landmarks.
