Bobby Long Illustrates Sonoran Desert Creatures for New Book Release

Bobby Long, an associate teaching professor specializing in visual communication, dedicated two years to portraying the diverse life of the Sonoran Desert. This project was initiated at the request of author and ecologist Gary Paul Nabhan, who sought illustrations for his book. The “Sonoran Desert Bestiary: A More-than-Nature History” delves into the human fascination with the elusive creatures of the desert, intertwining biology with imaginative storytelling. Ahead of the book’s release, the NAU Review engaged Long in a conversation about his contributions to this work.

Exploring “Sonoran Desert Bestiary: A More-than-Natural History”

This publication offers a vibrant blend of folklore, storytelling, and the study of desert ecology, highlighting the lesser-known or overlooked life forms of the Sonoran Desert. The book features creatures that are part of traditional lore or whose enigmatic life cycles lend them a mythical aura. In response to Nabhan’s comprehensive chapters on 12 creatures, Long produced over 65 illustrations, ranging from full-color pieces to grayscale drawings, enriching the book with visual diversity.

The Illustrative Journey: A Glimpse into Long’s Favorites

When asked about his favorite illustrations, Long expressed difficulty in selecting just one. He candidly shared, “I’m a relentless self-critic, but I’m especially happy with how my desert leaf-cutter ant, bark scorpion, Pinacate beetle and five-toed mole Lizard turned out. Can you tell I like bugs and oddities?”

A Two-Year Artistic Endeavor

Long devoted nearly two years to his part of the project, creating intricate pencil drawings and digitally enhancing some with color. Additionally, he crafted vector art to introduce each chapter. Throughout the process, Long emphasized traditional artistic methods, stating, “No generative artificial intelligence was used in the making of this artwork or this book as a whole.”

The book, “Sonoran Desert Bestiary: A More-than Nature History,” will be showcased from 6-7 p.m. on October 11 at the Bright Side Bookshop, located at 18 N. San Francisco Street. This event, which includes a book signing and Q&A session, is free to the public. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP in advance via the Bright Side Bookshop website.
