NCDHHS Reveals Strategic Plan to Enhance Health Services in NC

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has unveiled a comprehensive four-year Strategic Plan, emphasizing key priority areas aimed at enhancing health services across the state. These priorities are designed to guide the department in fostering community partnerships, implementing innovative health solutions, and ensuring accessible services for all residents.

“North Carolinians depend on NCDHHS for access to affordable care and essential services that keep communities healthy and safe,” emphasized NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. “The strategic plan and priority areas offer a clear path forward for this work amid a rapidly evolving environment. We are grateful for the support of our partners as we create a healthier, more resilient North Carolina for all.”

To address the pressing needs of North Carolinians, the department has outlined four main priorities:

  • Deliver critical services to improve health and wellbeing: This involves the coordinated rollout of NC Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and child welfare services, ensuring continuous access and minimal disruption for beneficiaries.
  • Transform rural health: Focus on strengthening the NC Rural Health Transformation Program to support thriving rural communities by fully leveraging federal investments.
  • Strengthen behavioral health crisis care: Enhance coordination with the justice system to better assist individuals with mental health needs, including those involved in the justice system.
  • Promote affordable and accessible health care: Through partnerships and innovative solutions, NCDHHS aims to reduce costs and expand access to high-quality services, as detailed by the Health Care Affordability Commission.

The Strategic Plan also presents five overarching goals for the department to pursue in the coming years:

  • Access to Care: Ensure North Carolinians can safely and easily access NCDHHS services and programs.
  • Whole Person Well-Being: Enhance the overall well-being of residents by providing comprehensive and high-quality services.
  • Transform and Modernize Health Care: Revamp the state’s health care system by modernizing service delivery and strengthening community care.
  • Sustainable Workforce: Develop a skilled workforce to support health initiatives through training and innovative employment strategies.
  • Organizational Excellence: Improve operational efficiency and accountability through continuous improvement and data-driven strategies.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to serving North Carolinians,” reiterated Sangvai. “NCDHHS has an important responsibility to make sure North Carolinians can afford and access the services and supports they need, while also preparing for changes and opportunities ahead.”

This updated Strategic Plan provides a unified framework for NCDHHS divisions to align actions and track progress. Key initiatives include modernizing the state’s child care quality rating system and expanding diabetes prevention programs. The plan underscores NCDHHS’s mission to enhance health, safety, and well-being through collaboration and innovation.
