LANSING, Mich. – In a strategic move to consolidate its presence in the United States, Hansae Mobility USA Manufacturing, LLC, a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hansae Mobility Co., Ltd., is set to expand its operations in Chesterfield Township, Michigan. This expansion, announced during Governor Whitmer’s visit to South Korea, promises to bring 102 new jobs and involves an investment exceeding $93.2 million.
Hansae Mobility, known for producing driveline systems and various automotive components, will establish a 400,000 square-foot manufacturing facility. This expansion will bolster Michigan’s standing as a leader in automotive manufacturing by enhancing the supply chain within the state.
“Michigan is on the move and open for business, competing for and winning big projects in next-generation industries like auto manufacturing,” stated Governor Whitmer. “Today’s announcement will create 102 new good-paying jobs and help cement Michigan as the best place to chase the next big idea. Let’s keep working together to show the world that Michigan is the best place to build the future.”
Roy (Taein) Kim, President of Hansae Mobility USA Manufacturing LLC, expressed enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We are pleased to become part of the Chesterfield Township community and to expand Hansae Mobility’s manufacturing presence in Michigan. Building on nearly a decade of operations in the United States, this investment represents an important next step in our growth.”
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) supports this project with a $625,000 Michigan Business Development Program (MBDP) performance-based grant. The initiative is expected to generate a total capital investment of $93,214,535. Additionally, Michigan Works! has proposed a workforce development plan valued at $702,413, with $582,000 earmarked from the Going Pro Talent Fund to aid the project.
The new facility will bring together expanded assembly and machining capabilities, which currently occur in Korea, under one roof. This integration aims to reduce transportation costs and enhance supply chain efficiency.
MEDC CEO Quentin L. Messer, Jr., commented on the development, “We are grateful for Hansae Mobility’s vote of confidence in Michigan. By taking our state’s economic development strategy on the road and connecting with companies around the globe, Team Michigan is bringing supply chains home.” He further noted the state’s leadership in the automotive industry and its robust workforce.
Macomb County’s Director of Planning and Economic Development, Vicky Rowinski, also highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “This project represents more than a major investment in a new facility. It is an investment in our workforce and our community. By retaining 171 existing jobs and creating approximately 102 new positions, Hansae Mobility is bringing new opportunities to Macomb County.”
Justin Robinson, president & CEO of the Detroit Regional Partnership, added, “Congratulations to Hansae Mobility on this exciting next chapter in the Detroit Region. Their continued investment is a testament to the value our region provides to global mobility companies.”
Chesterfield Township Supervisor Bradley Kersten expressed pride in welcoming Hansae Mobility to the community, emphasizing the economic growth and job opportunities the facility will bring. “We wish them nothing but success and happiness here in our community,” he said.
