University of Arizona Among Top 25 Public Research Universities in US

University of Arizona Celebrated as a Leading Public Research Institution

In a recent accolade highlighting the impact of major research universities, the University of Arizona (U of A) has once again been recognized for its significant contributions to public research. The latest rankings by The Washington Monthly place U of A among the top tier of national research institutions.

The U of A achieved a noteworthy No. 41 spot overall and secured the No. 23 position among public universities in the Best Colleges for Research list released on August 30. Additionally, the university is distinguished as the leading institution in Arizona and holds the second position within the Big 12 Conference.

The Washington Monthly’s rankings aim to “illuminate the incredible benefits that America’s research universities provide to the country at large and to the states and regions where they’re located.” The evaluation considers around 140 universities, all of which invest a minimum of $100 million annually in research. The assessment criteria cover four equally weighted areas: total research spending, the quantity of science and engineering doctorates conferred, faculty elected to the National Academies, and major national honors awarded to scholars.

The University of Arizona’s strong placement is further supported by its federal research expenditures, where it ranks No. 31. It also awarded 335 science and engineering Ph.D.s, and its faculty’s achievements contributed to a ranking of No. 48 for faculty accolades.

In fiscal year 2024, U of A’s research activity surpassed $1 billion, affirming its status as the premier research organization in Arizona. For the seventh consecutive year, it is among the nation’s top 20 public research institutions.
