Grace Johnson: From Construction Graduate to TV Inspiration
The journey from university classrooms to television screens is not a typical path for most graduates, but for Grace Johnson, it’s a reality. A recent graduate in construction management, Johnson has not only secured a career in the skilled trades but is also featured in a new docuseries. Titled “Building Back America’s Trades,” this three-part series by the Lowe’s Foundation is available on HBO Max, discovery+, and Magnolia Network. The series highlights Johnson’s unique path and serves as an inspiration for those aspiring to enter the trades.
Influence of Early Exposure to Construction
Johnson’s passion for construction was ignited at a young age, thanks to her father’s career as a contractor. “Growing up with a dad who’s a contractor, I was exposed early on to what it takes to build something from the ground up,” Johnson shared. Her childhood experiences on job sites instilled in her a love for problem-solving, teamwork, and community building. These early experiences were pivotal in her decision to pursue a career in construction, eventually aiming for a role as a site superintendent.
Role of NAU’s Construction Management Program
The construction management program at Northern Arizona University (NAU) played a crucial role in preparing Johnson for her career. The program provided her with a solid foundation in both technical skills and leadership. “NAU’s construction management program has given me a strong foundation in both the technical and leadership sides of the industry,” Johnson mentioned. From learning project planning and safety to developing communication skills, Johnson gained the confidence to thrive in a field where women remain underrepresented.
What to Expect from “Building Back America’s Trades”
The docuseries offers a genuine glimpse into pursuing a career in trades. Viewers can expect to see the challenges and triumphs of Johnson’s journey, highlighting the hands-on training and mentorship she received. “More than anything, I hope people see that there are many different paths into the trades and that it’s a rewarding, impactful career,” Johnson expressed. The show emphasizes the personal growth and determination needed to succeed, showcasing the rewarding nature of a career in trades for those eager to lead and make a difference.
