New Center in Tempe to Boost Support for Unhoused Residents
In a collaborative effort to enhance community services, Maricopa County has teamed up with the Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA), the City of Tempe, and other partners to initiate the construction of the East Valley Housing, Health, and Human Services Center. The new facility aims to provide crucial assistance to the unhoused and underserved populations, fostering pathways to economic stability.
“Breaking ground on this new facility in Tempe is more than just adding shelter beds,” stated Thomas Galvin, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, District 2. “It’s about creating a hub where people can find stability, support, and a meaningful path forward. This investment helps people get back on their feet by providing a roof over their heads along with the resources and guidance they need to rebuild their lives.”
In December 2021, the Board of Supervisors allocated $6 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to facilitate the addition of 80 new shelter beds for emergency and bridge housing, marking a new chapter for TCAA. The facility, strategically located near the Loop 101 Freeway and Apache Blvd. in Tempe, is projected to serve more than 40,000 clients annually, representing a 15% increase in service capacity. Key amenities include a 2,300-square-foot market-style pantry, a 2,000-square-foot kitchen, and a 3,000-square-foot Resource Navigation and Economic Empowerment Hub that will offer financial aid and support services. The grand opening of the new TCAA headquarters is slated for May 2026, coinciding with the agency’s 60th anniversary of community service.
