The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) will host a virtual media briefing featuring key public health figures to shed light on the situation and outline measures to curb the spread of this parasitic infection.
Dr. Carl Williams, the State Public Health Veterinarian, will open the session with introductory remarks. Following this, a Q&A session will be held with contributions from Shane Smith, the Branch Head of NCDHHS’ Food Protection and Facilities Branch, Anita MacMullan, the Director of the Food and Drug Protection Division at the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDACS), and Daniel Gaines, the Assistant Director of the same division.
As of July 20, 2026, the NCDHHS has reported 561 cases of cyclosporiasis in the state. In response, the department is actively collaborating with local, state, and federal entities to trace the origins of the cyclospora parasite. They are urging both residents and dining establishments to adhere to recommended safety practices to reduce the risk of infection.
