North Carolina’s Unemployment Rate Shows Positive Decline Amid National Trends
In June 2026, North Carolina witnessed a slight dip in its unemployment rate, now at a seasonally adjusted 3.6%, marking a 0.1 percentage point decline from May. This change mirrors the national trend, where the unemployment rate similarly fell to 4.2%.
Compared to the previous year, North Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped by 0.2 percentage points. However, the number of employed individuals in the state saw a decrease of 12,684 over the month, bringing the total to 5,073,245. Year over year, there was a reduction of 14,850 in employment figures. Conversely, the number of unemployed individuals decreased by 4,567 over the month to 189,968, with a year-over-year decrease of 12,879.
Employment Sector Insights
The Total Nonfarm employment data, collected through a monthly establishment survey, reported a minor increase of 400 jobs in June, reaching 5,115,400. Several industries experienced job growth, including Construction (2,900), Private Education & Health Services (1,100), Professional & Business Services (1,000), Government (600), Manufacturing (300), and Other Services (100). However, some sectors faced declines, such as Trade, Transportation & Utilities (3,800), Leisure and Hospitality Services (1,100), Information (600), and Financial Activities (100). Employment in Mining & Logging remained stable.
Yearly Employment Changes
Since June 2025, North Carolina’s Total Nonfarm jobs have increased by 62,900. The Total Private sector contributed 58,500 jobs, while the Government sector added 4,400. Notable industry gains included Private Education & Health Services (21,800), Leisure & Hospitality Services (15,600), Construction (15,500), and Professional & Business Services (14,800). Meanwhile, the Manufacturing sector faced a significant reduction of 10,000 jobs, Information lost 2,900 positions, and Trade, Transportation & Utilities decreased by 300. Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged over the year.
