Village of Ellsworth Achieves Redevelopment Ready Communities Status

LANSING, Mich. – The Village of Ellsworth has been recognized for its strategic approach to development, earning the esteemed Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) Essentials designation. This announcement was made by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), highlighting the village’s commitment to fostering an inviting environment for living, working, and investment.

The RRC initiative, introduced in 2013, is designed to enable communities to plan effectively by adopting best practices in planning, zoning, and economic development. It encourages proactive stakeholder engagement and aims to make communities more appealing for development, thus boosting their competitiveness in today’s economy.

In response to feedback from participating communities, the MEDC introduced two distinct RRC designations: “Essentials” and “Certified.” This tiered approach allows communities to select a path tailored to their specific needs and capabilities. The Essentials designation marks a community’s readiness to execute its vision using foundational practices.

“We applaud the Village of Ellsworth for achieving Essentials status,” expressed MEDC SVP of Community Planning and Development Readiness Michele Wildman. “The Village of Ellsworth has identified its desired direction for the future and has a plan to achieve its goals for the community. We look forward to building upon our relationship with the Village and supporting its continued economic development efforts.”

The Village of Ellsworth’s journey to achieving this designation involved meticulous updates to key planning and zoning documents. This included a refreshed master plan, updated zoning ordinances, and the adoption of a capital improvements plan. These enhancements ensure a predictable development process that aligns with Michigan law.

“As a small northern Michigan community, we don’t have endless resources, but we do have a lot of promise,” remarked Village President Jerry Rasmussen. “We’re looking forward to welcoming investors who want to get to know our village, and with the MEDC team behind us, we’re ready to support projects and investments that truly fit what our community cares about.”

Currently, the MEDC has acknowledged 94 communities across Michigan at the Certified level and 39 communities at the Essentials level. These communities are recognized as being well-prepared in planning and zoning, removing traditional barriers, and creating opportunities for investors. For a complete list of RRCs, visit here.

“We appreciate the support provided by the MEDC Technical Assistance Team throughout the Essentials designation process,” stated Tina Sundelius, Deputy Clerk. “The team was responsive and helpful every step of the way, and I am excited to see how this achievement helps move the Village of Ellsworth forward.”
