Roscoe Jones Jr. Steps Down as Dean of Drake Law School
In a recent announcement, Roscoe Jones Jr. revealed his decision to step down from his role as the dean of Drake University Law School, effective August 7, 2026. Jones, who began his tenure as the 22nd dean of the Law School on July 1, 2024, has expressed plans to return to Washington, D.C., where he aims to reengage in national policy work.
“After two wonderful years leading the Law School at Drake, my wife and I have decided to return home to Washington, D.C.,” Jones stated. “Serena is eager to reconnect with the community she’s built there, and I am looking forward to reengaging in national policy work at a consequential time. I’m stepping down now to ensure the Law School will have cohesive leadership in place for the new school year. We are proud of the accomplishments of our community, and we look forward to seeing the Law School continue its successes in the years to come.”
During his leadership, Jones implemented several strategic initiatives that significantly advanced the Law School’s standing. Under his guidance, Drake Law School maintained its position among the top 100 law schools in the United States for the fourth year running. The school also achieved remarkable student recruitment results, enrolling a class with some of the highest metrics in its history. Furthermore, Jones spearheaded the introduction of an AI & Law certificate, a joint JD-PhD program with the School of Education, and the Dean’s Lecture Series on Leadership and the Law. His tenure also saw the expansion of resources for student opportunities in rural areas, along with a recruitment tour to the Deep South and Southwest.
Drake University President Marty Martin expressed his gratitude for Jones’ contributions, stating, “The University is grateful for Roscoe’s leadership and contributions. His decades of experience in government affairs and public policy have served us well, and we wish him the best as he returns to work in Washington, D.C.”
The University is currently in the process of finalizing plans for appointing an interim dean and will provide further updates in the upcoming weeks.
