Virginia Rocketry Team Excels in International Competition
The University of Virginia’s rocketry team recently achieved commendable success in an international competition in Midland, Texas. Their remarkable performance earned them accolades, particularly for their innovative approach to documenting their launch.
Although the team set out with the goal of defending their 2025 national championship in the altitude category, where rockets aim to fly as close as possible to 10,000 feet using commercially available engines, they finished ninth among 80 competitors. Despite this, the team’s onboard video received top honors for the best livestream, showcasing the flight’s intricate details and unique perspective. The video can be viewed here.
In addition to their video success, the team, part of the UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science, secured a second-place finish for their comprehensive technical report. The 100-page document thoroughly explains the processes involved in designing, building, and testing their rocket.
Further insights into the team’s preparation, including their final practice launch in April, are available through UVA Today.
Mike McPherson, an adjunct professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and the team’s faculty adviser, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s achievements, stating, “I’m really pleased and proud of the team’s work this year.”
