Celebrate Safely: Fireworks Safety Tips for Independence Day 2026

MADISON, Wis. – As Americans gear up to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States this Independence Day, the focus is not just on fireworks but on ensuring a safe celebration for all. ReadyWisconsin emphasizes the importance of making safety the priority during these festivities.

“As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors for this Semiquincentennial, people shouldn’t forget to keep safety in mind,” stated Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle. “A few moments of caution can make the difference between a successful celebration and a preventable tragedy.”

In 2025, Wisconsin experienced 226 fireworks-related emergency department visits, with over half occurring in early July, according to preliminary data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Even seemingly harmless items like sparklers can reach temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a serious fire hazard.

Fireworks Safety Tips

While attending professional fireworks displays is the safest option, those who choose to set off their own should adhere to the following guidelines provided by ReadyWisconsin:

  • Abide by local fireworks laws and permits.
  • Ensure children do not handle fireworks and supervise their use closely.
  • Always ignite fireworks outdoors and have water readily available.
  • Maintain a safe distance of at least 35 feet from ground-based fireworks.
  • Do not attempt to relight or approach dud fireworks. Let them sit before disposal.
  • Protect pets from stress by keeping them indoors with distractions like TV or radio.
  • Ignite only one firework at a time to prevent accidents.
  • Avoid using fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Consider alternatives such as party poppers, bubbles, or glow sticks.

Additional Safety Tips for July Fourth

Beyond fireworks, ReadyWisconsin provides further tips for a safe holiday:

  • Prepare an emergency car kit with essentials like water, snacks, and a phone charger. For traffic updates, use the 511Wisconsin app or visit https://511wi.gov.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked cars. Vehicle temperatures can rapidly become life-threatening, even with slightly open windows.
  • When grilling, maintain a three-foot distance from structures and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Establish a safety perimeter to keep children and pets away.
  • Ensure adult supervision during pool activities and use flotation devices when necessary.
