University of Iowa to Dismantle Hawkins Drive Water Tower in July

As the University of Iowa transitions to improved water infrastructure, plans are underway to dismantle the Hawkins Drive water tower, which is no longer required. The removal process is scheduled to commence with initial preparations on July 6, followed by dismantlement starting July 10. This operation will take place over weekends until the end of August.

The now redundant water tower will be methodically taken down in segments, utilizing cranes and specialized tools, ensuring minimal disruption. The new water tower located in Parking Lot 75 now caters to the university’s water needs, offering enhanced storage and reliability to support both campus and healthcare services.

Importantly, the dismantling work will not interfere with essential healthcare operations. Access to the University of Iowa Health Care’s main entrance will remain open for patients, visitors, and employees.

Work will take place from 6 p.m. on Fridays through 3 a.m. on Mondays, stretching from July 10 to the end of August.

Temporary Street Closures

Hospital loop near university campus main entrance

Throughout the weekends, the southbound hospital loop exiting Parking Ramp 1 and the valet lot will be temporarily closed. Traffic will be rerouted via Hospital Drive to Newton Road for those leaving Parking Ramp 1, the main university entrance, or Stead Family Children’s Hospital. However, valet parking services will continue to operate.

Hawkins Drive

During weekends, Hawkins Drive will be limited to one lane for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Sidewalks

On weekdays, pedestrian pathways near the main university campus entrance will be redirected via a temporary sidewalk south of the construction area. During weekends, the sidewalk on Hawkins Drive from the Center for Disabilities and Development entrance road to Stead Family Children’s Hospital will be inaccessible, with a detour in place. Visitors and staff are advised to use alternative routes for faster access to the hospital.

Level 2 skywalk from Parking Ramp 3

The skywalk connected to the campus from Parking Ramp 3 will stay open. However, for safety during lifting operations on weekends, pedestrians may experience brief pauses of up to five minutes. Alternative entrances are recommended to bypass any delays.
