University Board of Trustees Reinforces Strategic Initiatives and Leadership Appointments
In a significant move towards reinforcing its strategic goals, the university’s board of trustees has approved several measures aimed at enhancing Lehigh’s academic, financial, and campus development pursuits. This decision was made during the board’s end-of-academic-year meeting, where key priorities were reaffirmed.
The board sanctioned the fiscal year 2027 operating budget, ensuring continued investment in academic programs, student support services, and infrastructure improvements. These investments are designed to bolster the student experience and align with Lehigh’s long-term strategic objectives. Additionally, trustees recognized the achievements of students by approving the conferral of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees.
Progress was also made on campus development projects, including the East Hill Residence Halls and the Forest Park project. These initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the campus environment, support future growth, and foster a dynamic residential research experience.
Leadership transitions were another focal point of the meeting. The board expressed gratitude to Vincent Forlenza ’75 for his service as chair, while James R. Maida ’85 P’17 P’19 is set to assume the role on July 1, 2026. Furthermore, the term of President Joseph J. Helble ’82 was extended through 2031, recognizing his contributions to interdisciplinary growth, innovation, and strategic planning.
Since his appointment in 2021, Helble has been instrumental in launching Inspiring the Future Makers, a comprehensive institutional strategy guiding investments in student success, research excellence, and community engagement. Under his leadership, Lehigh has achieved Carnegie R1 research status and established research centers focused on catastrophe modeling, assistive technologies, and electrification solutions. His tenure has been marked by educational innovation and increased institutional visibility.
The board also confirmed several key academic and administrative appointments. Robin Hojnoski was appointed dean of the College of Education, following her tenure as acting dean since December 2024, where she emphasized strategic planning and community engagement. Cheryl Matherly was reappointed as vice president and vice provost for international affairs, continuing her leadership in global engagement. Stephen P. DeWeerth was reappointed as the dean of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, while Christine E. Cook’s title was updated to senior vice president for finance and administration, reflecting expanded responsibilities.
The next board of trustees meeting is scheduled for this fall, continuing their commitment to the university’s growth and excellence.
