WELLS, Nev. – The recent wild horse gather operation in the Elko and Ely Districts came to an end on June 13, 2026. This operation successfully rounded up 700 wild horses from the Antelope Complex and 301 from the Triple B Complex located on public lands.
Overpopulation of wild horses in these areas has been a pressing concern, leading to the need for this gather. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) seeks to alleviate the pressure on these lands by restoring ecological balance and ensuring multiple-use relationships on public lands.
This effort aligns with Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, aiming to achieve the Standards for Rangeland Health as outlined by the Mohave – South Great Basin Resource Advisory Council. By maintaining a sustainable herd size, the BLM helps preserve habitats crucial to other wildlife, including sage grouse, pronghorn antelope, and mule deer.
The gathered horses have been transported to the Indian Lakes Off-Range Corrals, along with Wild Horse and Burro Off-range Corrals in Fallon, Nevada, and Sutherland, Utah. These animals are being prepared for the BLM’s wild horse and burro Adoption and Sales Program. Those not adopted or sold will find a home in long-term pastures, where they will continue to be cared for and remain protected under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
