Nighttime Closures Scheduled for I-26 East in Asheville: Detour and Construction Updates
ASHEVILLE – Motorists traveling on Interstate 26 East in Asheville should anticipate overnight closures this week, as construction efforts intensify. A planned detour via Brevard Road will feature extended green light durations to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
Commencing Monday and lasting through Thursday night, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s contractor will shut down a four-mile segment of I-26 East. This closure stretches from Brevard Road (Exit 33) to Long Shoals Road (Exit 37). On Wednesday night, the closure will extend further, reaching U.S. 25 (Exit 44).
The nighttime closures are slated to begin no earlier than 7 p.m., depending on traffic conditions, and are expected to conclude by 6 a.m. the following morning.
Drivers will be rerouted along a designated detour, marked with extended green light phases. This detour will guide vehicles south on Brevard Road (N.C. 191), then onto Long Shoals Road (N.C. 146), before rejoining I-26. Specifically for Wednesday, the detour will direct drivers from Long Shoals Road to U.S. 25 South (Hendersonville Road) before reconnecting with I-26.
The closures are implemented to enable Fluor-United Joint Venture crews to perform essential work over the eastbound lanes, including the Blue Ridge Parkway area. Tasks will involve removing concrete from the newly constructed bridge and installing permanent traffic signs, one of which is near Airport Road. Additionally, on Wednesday, a sub-contractor from Archer-Wright will apply permanent lane markings on I-26 East, spanning from Fanning Bridge Road to U.S. 25.
These activities form part of the broader I-26 widening initiative in both Buncombe and Henderson Counties. Transportation authorities urge drivers to plan their routes carefully, stay attentive, and adhere to all traffic signage within the work zones.
