Protecting Michigan Families: Free Water Filters to Reduce Lead Exposure
Lead contamination in drinking water poses significant health risks, but preventive measures can mitigate these dangers. In response, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched the Get Ahead of Lead (GAoL) initiative. This statewide effort aims to minimize lead exposure from water, plumbing, paint, and dust, with a focus on safeguarding families.
As part of the GAoL strategy, MDHHS is distributing free, certified lead-reducing water filters and replacement cartridges to certain Michigan residents. Here’s what you need to know about eligibility and how to obtain these vital resources.
Eligibility for Free Water Filters
To receive assistance through the Statewide Filter Support Program, households must satisfy two specific conditions:
- Medicaid Enrollment: The household must have a child under 19 enrolled in Medicaid or a pregnant person enrolled in Medicaid.
- Plumbing Risk: The home must have or potentially have lead-based plumbing, such as:
- Lead or galvanized pipes within the home.
- A lead service line linking the home to the main water supply.
- Faucets, fixtures, or fittings sold or installed before 2014.
Note: Households using private wells are eligible if they meet Medicaid enrollment and plumbing risk criteria.
Reducing Lead Exposure in Your Home
While awaiting your water filter, or as a general practice, consider flushing your pipes regularly. This simple step can significantly reduce lead leaching from home plumbing into drinking water.
