North Carolina is currently basking in the limelight of international soccer as it hosts several key events that are drawing attention from fans worldwide. This surge in soccer-related activities is not only thrilling fans but also bolstering the state’s economy significantly.
Governor Josh Stein expressed pride in the state’s role in these events, stating, “North Carolina is proud to be enjoying the summer of soccer. All across our state, different events are bringing visitors, excitement, and an economic boost to North Carolina businesses while showcasing everything our state has to offer.”
The Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund (MEGA Fund), overseen by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, is a crucial factor in attracting these high-profile events. The fund aims to enhance economic activity by supporting local communities in hosting sporting events and entertainment attractions that highlight North Carolina on both a national and international stage.
“Major events don’t just create memorable experiences for fans—they create real economic value for North Carolina communities,” emphasized North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. “Through the MEGA Fund, we’re helping local partners attract events that support jobs, drive visitor spending, and showcase communities across our state to national and international audiences.”
This summer’s soccer events in North Carolina include The Soccer Tournament (TST) and the U.S. Men’s National Team Send-Off Match in Charlotte, which precede the FIFA World Cup. The Soccer Tournament recently concluded in Cary, attracting nearly 58,000 spectators, while the U.S. team’s friendly match against Senegal drew another 58,000 fans to Bank of America Stadium.
Moreover, three national teams participating in the World Cup have selected North Carolina as their training base. Germany will be based in Winston-Salem, Norway in Greensboro, and Scotland in Charlotte.
The MEGA Fund continues to expand North Carolina’s portfolio of major events, with over $15 million already allocated for 2026 events. This includes support for NASCAR events and a nearly $1 million grant for the Professional Pickleball Association National Championships in Cary. An additional $21 million is earmarked for future events.
The economic impact of these events is substantial. A post-event analysis revealed that The Soccer Tournament generated $14.7 million for Cary and Wake County, with approximately 48,000 attendees. Additionally, the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association reported $1 million in spending from youth soccer activities statewide in 2025. Meanwhile, Charlotte FC’s activities contributed $234.2 million to the local economy in 2023.
These events, supported by the MEGA Fund, not only boost spending in hotels, restaurants, and small businesses but also increase the visibility of local communities on the global stage. In 2025, tourism spending in North Carolina reached a record $37.2 billion, supporting nearly 231,000 jobs and generating over $2.7 billion in tax revenues.
The MEGA Fund, established by the North Carolina General Assembly, aims to bolster the state’s economy by attracting major sporting, cultural, and entertainment events. These initiatives enhance job creation, strengthen local economies, and position North Carolina as a top choice for visitors and investments.
