Drake Alumna Selected as U.S. Cultural Ambassador to Uruguay
A recent graduate from Drake University, Emerson Whittemore, has been awarded the esteemed Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award. Set to travel to Uruguay in the upcoming year, Emerson will act as a cultural ambassador for the United States, joining a legacy of over two dozen Drake alumni who have achieved Fulbright honors since the 1950s.
In her new role, Emerson will enhance the Fulbright mission by advancing English language learning and fostering cultural exchange. This opportunity will help her cultivate mutual understanding between the U.S. and Uruguay, while also reinforcing her dedication to culturally sensitive advocacy in her future career as a mental health counselor.
Shelley Fairbairn, a professor of education and coordinator of post-graduate global scholarships, expressed pride in Emerson’s accomplishment, stating, “We are incredibly proud of Emerson who has been chosen from among the country’s top candidates for this prestigious international scholarship… We have full confidence that she will serve as an exceptional representative of both the United States and Drake University during her time in Uruguay.”
Hailing from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Emerson graduated from Park Center Senior High School before earning her degree at Drake, majoring in sociology and Spanish with a minor in leadership education and development. During her time at Drake, she participated in numerous organizations such as Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute. At the spring 2026 commencement, she was honored with the Oreon E. Scott Senior Legacy Award, which recognizes a student leader who exemplifies scholarship, leadership, service, and involvement.
Her interest in Uruguay began with a 2025 internship in Argentina, where she was drawn to Uruguay’s community-focused culture and its reputation for civil liberties in South America.
Emerson shared, “I fell in love with Uruguay’s vibrant, welcoming culture and its commitment to community… Through this experience, I hope to gain insights into mentorship and cross-cultural connection that will shape my career as a counselor. I’m profoundly grateful to my mentors at Drake for encouraging me to pursue this with such purpose.”
Emerson attributes her readiness for this international challenge to Drake’s holistic academic and extracurricular environment. “My time at Drake provided the tangible skills necessary to navigate high-impact moments with grace and compassion,” she noted. Upon completing her eight-month grant, Emerson plans to pursue graduate studies in mental health counseling.
