Innovative HAWK Signal Enhances Pedestrian Safety in Aberdeen
ABERDEEN – Residents and drivers in Aberdeen will notice a new addition to their daily commute—a state-of-the-art crosswalk signal now operational on U.S. 1/ U.S. 15-501 (Sandhills Blvd.), strategically placed between Knight Street and West Maple Avenue.
This project, recently finalized by the N.C. Department of Transportation, features a sophisticated system designed to bolster pedestrian safety while minimizing interruptions for drivers. The High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk, commonly referred to as the “HAWK” signal, is set to revolutionize how pedestrians navigate the bustling intersection.
The HAWK signal is engineered to alert drivers with a series of light sequences when a pedestrian is ready to cross, ensuring a smooth and safe transition for all road users. As drivers approach the intersection, they are prompted to heed the following guidelines:
- Flashing yellow – indicates that a pedestrian has activated the crossing signal; drivers should decelerate.
- Solid yellow – a warning to prepare for a complete stop if feasible.
- Solid red – mandates a full stop as pedestrians occupy the crosswalk.
