As Memorial Day weekend approaches, North Carolina gears up to honor its fallen service members. Many families plan to enjoy time at pools, lakes, or beaches. In light of these activities, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey emphasizes the importance of water safety, especially since drowning ranks as the second leading cause of death for children aged 1 to 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Water Safety Precautions
Families can take several measures to ensure safety around water:
- Always supervise children and never leave them unattended.
- Learn and be prepared to administer CPR to both children and adults.
- Opt to swim near a lifeguard whenever possible.
- Pay attention to warning flags at the beach, as they signal potential rip currents.
- If caught in a rip current, remain calm and avoid fighting it. Swim parallel to the shore to escape, and if needed, call for help to draw attention.
- Always wear a life jacket while on a boat.
- Avoid operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Commissioner Causey extends his wishes for a safe and pleasant Memorial Day weekend to all.
