Explore Civil War Art and History at Fort Fisher’s Summer Kickoff Event

Step into a bygone era at Fort Fisher State Historic Site this coming Saturday, May 30, where history enthusiasts can explore the confluence of art and war. This unique public program promises a captivating blend of Civil War art exhibitions and live artillery demonstrations, all accessible without charge.

Operating under the Division of State Historic Sites, part of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Fort Fisher will open its doors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The main event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., inviting visitors to delve into how art was used to document and interpret the Civil War. Through sketches, paintings, and other visual media, both soldiers and civilians captured the essence of the era. The event will also feature living history interpreters and community groups, providing interactive and family-friendly activities.

Artillery Demonstrations and Special Tours

For those interested in the military aspect, artillery demonstrations are set for 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. These sessions offer a firsthand look at the formidable power of Civil War weaponry. Additionally, “Above the Scenes” guided tours will be available at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. These tours grant access to exclusive areas typically closed to the public and offer deeper insights into Fort Fisher’s historical significance. Tour tickets are priced at $10 plus tax and can be acquired at the visitor center’s information desk.

Fort Fisher, often referred to as the Gibraltar of the South, played a crucial role in protecting Wilmington’s port during the Civil War until it was captured by U.S. forces in January 1865. The site gained recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
